Is America being chastised by God?
Part 4: God's Chastisement of Nations
For the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [begin] at us, what shall the end [be] of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
1 Peter 4:17-18
God is loving and merciful. But He has made it clear in His Holy Word that like a father who disciplines his children out of love when they go astray, He will also out of love chastise those Christian nations that turn their backs on Him. There is a long history of God using the enemies of His children to punish those He loves for their grievous acts against Him. That doesn't mean that He sides with our enemies, or that He hates us. It simply means He sometimes uses them as instruments of chastisement to get our attention to encourage us to repent of our wickedness. Here are a few Bible verses that deal with the issue of God judging nations:
The LORD is known [by] the judgment [which] he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. The wicked shall be turned into hell [and] all the nations that forget God. Psalms 9:16-17
And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
Thou [art] my battle axe [and] weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;
But the LORD [is] the true God, he [is] the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
The whole idea behind his chastisement is to get us to a point of turning our hearts back towards him, and away from whatever sinful behavior or thoughts were keeping us from a close relationship with him. Sometimes this is accomplished with only minor chastisement. In other cases, God has to bring individuals, cities and even nations to their knees with devastating chastisement before they will give up their stubborn refusal to honor and worship him. Our pastor said in a recent sermon that he believes that hurricane Katrina was a chastisement on this country. I'm sure that thought was being echoed in churches all across the nation. This may be especially true where New Orleans is concerned. With their blatantly sinful Marti Gras events, and their reliance on the sinful practice of gambling for revenue, it's not a big surprise to anyone who understands God's chastisement that they would have been hit as hard as they were. When God does hit individuals, cities or even nations that hard, his intention is to encourage them to get to this point in their spiritual lives:
The LORD [is] nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Psalms 34:18
