About 20-years ago, I completed a self-study course called "Radiological Monitoring".  This course was available to any citizen that wanted to take it.  Apparently, today a course like this is no longer available.  Click on the images below to see a larger version of the book cover, and its Table of Contents.  I am in the process of retaking this course so that I can once again be proficient at using the survey meters and dosimeters that I still own.

Pages in the book that explain the importance of frequently monitoring radiation levels in all locations of the shelter to keep occupants in the safest areas.  Since most people will take shelter in their own homes, they most likely will not have the necessary monitoring equipment to do this.  However, if they were in a public fallout shelter where a trained monitor was present, they could be assured they were in the safest locations within the shelter itself.
