On Friday, March 8, reporter
Kyle Anderson
from
WCHM Channel 4 interviewed Mr. Martin, founder of the Young Earth
Creation Club. The interview was basically to discuss what we
(creationists) are expecting to happen at the March 11 meeting of the Standards
Committee of the Ohio State Board of Education. The meeting will
be a panel discussion of Intelligent Design. WCMH put some excerpts from the report on their web site
at the following link: http://www.nbc4columbus.com/news/1294910/detail.html A few comments about this report.
- It was balanced and fair. Mr. Anderson
did a professional job in the way he conducted the interview, and
presented the final edited version.
- The following quote appeared in the broadcast
and web versions of the report: "I would really like to hear what the evolutionists and the creationists or the intelligent design folks
both have to say from a scientific perspective and stay away from the name-calling,"
Martin said. That is an accurate quote from me.
However, it needs some clarification. One of the things I'm
usually quick to point out to others is that creationism
and intelligent design are not the same thing (see this link for an
explanation of the differences). By referring to both of
them in the context of this discussion, I may have left the
impression that I think they are the same. I could have
worded that better than I did. What I was thinking when I
said that is that most Creationists consider intelligent design to
be good science. In that sense, it is appropriate to lump
them together. However, what was not said is that not all
who consider ID to be good science are creationists.
Additionally, creationism does identify the designer. ID
makes no attempt to. This is not the reporter's fault.
I should have been a bit more careful with the way I worded that
statement.
- The reporter did make a clear statement that
there is a difference between ID and creationism. That is a
fact that I have rarely heard in the secular news media, and
reporter Kyle Anderson is to be commended for his attempt to
clarify that point.
We hope that future reports by WCMH on this
topic will be as fair and balanced as this one was.
